Before you appoint a marine surveyor
What is a Bootsgutachter or Yachtgutachter?
These German terms describe a boat or yacht expert or appraiser. The title alone does not define competence, independence, insurance, scope or whether the intended recipient will accept the Gutachten.
What details are needed for a German survey quote?
Provide the exact harbour or yard, vessel particulars, material, purpose and preferred date. Include launch and mast status, haul-out, sea-trial access and any insurer, lender or court requirement.
Can a stored boat be surveyed during winter?
Often partly, but covers, winterisation, removed batteries, unstepped masts and unavailable water systems can limit testing. Agree limitations and any later afloat stage in writing.
Can the report be written in English?
English reporting may be available. Confirm language, technical terminology, intended recipient, reliance and delivery date directly with the surveyor.
Does an association listing guarantee formal acceptance?
No. Association status, appointment as a court expert, vessel competence and acceptance by an insurer, lender or authority are different matters.
Who appoints the surveyor?
The client appoints the independent surveyor and agrees the scope, fee, limitations and report use directly. Germany Marine Survey provides information and introductions only.
